A Natural Remedy: Coconut Oil for Dogs & Cats

Coconut oil for dogs and catsDo you have a jar of coconut oil in your pantry? If you do, I am sure you are well aware of the many, many uses it holds. Not only will coconut oil flavor your food, keep your hair clean & be used as a body scrub {I mix it with sugar}; but coconut oil is extremely beneficial for dogs and cats.

It is recommended to give ¼ teaspoon for every 10 pounds of body weight or one tablespoon per 30 pounds.  Here is a great article walking you through how to start feeding your cat or dog coconut oil.

Coconut oil can be given to both dogs and cats & can yield many benefits.

  • Itchy coat?

Feed your pet a small scoop of oil to keep their coat healthy and restore the shine. You can also use a dab of oil on the pads of their cracked paw pads.

  • Picky eater?

Melt a bit of oil {you can mix a scoop of peanut butter in, too} and pour it over their dry food.

  • Looking for a long-lasting treat to combat boredom?

Add a scoop of coconut oil to a bully stick and place in a Kong or Bionic toy.

You can also add a scoop of coconut oil to the hollow center of our Tasman’s Marrow Bones.

Coconut oil for healthy skin for dogs and catsWhen we first rescued Daphne, her skin was scratchy, blotchy and looked really rough. After a year of feeding her coconut oil, along with regular exercise and a holistic diet, coat is thick, shiny and healthy.

You can find coconut oil at pet and grocery stores. We purchase a jar of organic extra virgin oil for $6 at our local grocery store. The jar can be stored in the refrigerator or pantry.
