A Natural Remedy: Coconut Oil for Dogs & Cats
Do you have a jar of coconut oil in your pantry? If you do, I am sure you are well aware of the many, many uses it holds. Not only will coconut oil flavor your food, keep your hair clean & be used as a body scrub {I mix it with sugar}; but coconut oil is extremely beneficial for dogs and cats.
It is recommended to give ¼ teaspoon for every 10 pounds of body weight or one tablespoon per 30 pounds. Here is a great article walking you through how to start feeding your cat or dog coconut oil.
Coconut oil can be given to both dogs and cats & can yield many benefits.
- Itchy coat?
Feed your pet a small scoop of oil to keep their coat healthy and restore the shine. You can also use a dab of oil on the pads of their cracked paw pads.
- Picky eater?
Melt a bit of oil {you can mix a scoop of peanut butter in, too} and pour it over their dry food.
- Looking for a long-lasting treat to combat boredom?
Add a scoop of coconut oil to a bully stick and place in a Kong or Bionic toy.
You can also add a scoop of coconut oil to the hollow center of our Tasman’s Marrow Bones.
When we first rescued Daphne, her skin was scratchy, blotchy and looked really rough. After a year of feeding her coconut oil, along with regular exercise and a holistic diet, coat is thick, shiny and healthy.
You can find coconut oil at pet and grocery stores. We purchase a jar of organic extra virgin oil for $6 at our local grocery store. The jar can be stored in the refrigerator or pantry.
